The House Mouse
The mouse that is most commonly found in the Ottawa area is the house mouse. They are unable to tolerate temperatures below -10°C. Therefore during the winter, these rodents try hard to find a warm space to occupy.
The Rat
Rats are able to chew holes through many types of building material and have the ability to squeeze through cracks and holes smaller than a quarter (1.25cm). Rats typically live in nests or burrows in dirt or concrete. The burrow entrances can be between 2.5cm to 10cm wide, with smooth edges and can also be found under bushes and plants. They will often have an entrance and exit hole.
Behaviour
Mice and rats are highly adaptable and can rapidly multiply. They spend a lot of their time in attics, garages, basements and kitchens. They are often found in attics since they are very good climbers. It is very important to take control of the problem as soon as possible – particularly if they have access to food inside your house. Mice and rats are nocturnal and it is very rare to see them but they always leave signs behind them.
